Maybe you'll find me obsessive about the Alhambra and it is very possible but honestly I don't care. I said I would give some historical details some day and I think maybe this is the time. In the 8th century or so, the Arabs conquer Spain and go at least as far as Valencia. Their empire was enormous and included Maghred and a big part of Spain.

After a retreat against the Spanish people, the political center of their empire becomes Granada and Ibn-Nasr decides to build a castle worthy of a king. The construction starts in 1238 and lasts one century. A couple of centuries later the empire is weakened and forced to retreat. As a symbol of their conquest, the king Charles V builds a new palace within the Alhambra in 1527. This building has nothing of the refinery visible in the rest of the palace.

Later it was abandoned and squatted by bandits, vagabonds then also artists and travellers for centuries, one of the most famous being Washington Irving. I would have liked to know the Alhambra at that time. At the beginning of the XIXth century though, it was "rediscovered" and restauration started. Although the successive alterations and destructions have had irreversible consequences, the remaining buildings make up for everything.

Peut-être allez-vous me trouver obsédée par l'Alhambra et c'est possible mais sincèrement peu importe. J'avais dit que je donnerais des détails historiques un jour et je pense que peut-être voici le moment.

J'aurais voulu connaitre l'Alhambra à ce moment-là. Au début du XIXe siècle, elle a été "redécouverte" et la restauration a commencé. Malgré les altérations et destructions successives qui ont eu des conséquences irréversibles, les bâtiments restants rattrapent le reste et cent fois.

Beautiful window at the Alhambra, Granada, Spain

The Alhambra... I am always breathtaken by the beauty of these buildings. They are to me among the most beautiful in the world if not the most beautiful and I say it without shame. Look at the details, the delicacy of these engravings. Where could we find nowadays a work so fine? The style is purely north african of course, you can see it with the purity of the lines, the shape of the openings. This is a part of the Nazarian palaces in the Alhambra, maybe one day I will explain the history of this work of art.

L'Alhambra... J'ai toujours le souffle coupé face à la beauté de ces bâtiments. Ils sont pour moi parmi les plus beaux au monde, si ce n'est les plus beaux. Regardez les détails, la finesse de ces gravures. Où trouve-t-on de nos jours un travail aussi délicat? Le style est purement nord africain bien sur, on peut le voir dans la pureté des lignes, la forme des ouvertures. Cette photo montre nue partie des palais Nazariens de l'Alhambra. peut-être qu'un jour j'expliquerai l'histoire de cette oeuvre.
