Checkpoint Charlie, Berlin, Germany

This is the most famous checkpoint to cross the wall between Berlin East and West. It remains now useless, one of the symbols of that past time. When you arrive there, you hardly even notice it, maybe if a few tourists take pictures. It's hard to realize how a place that was so important at some point in time is now so shallow.

Voici le plus célèbre poste de vérification pour traverser le mur entre Berlin Est et Ouest. Il est maintenant inutilisé, un des symboles du temps passé. En y arrivant, on le remarque à peine, peut-être si quelques touristes prennent des photos. On imagine difficilement qu'un endroit si important fut un temps puisse devenir si anodin.

Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, Berlin, Germany

One of the first places I discovered in Berlin is that weird field of blocks in the center of town. This memorial is designed to feel ill-at-ease wether you look at it or walk between the steles. It works. The blocks have different sizes and the floor is not even. When you walk in the monument you probably have an hunch of the feeling of Jews at the time. Or probably not, I mean it could in no way get even close but the purpose is there.

Un des premiers endroits que j'ai découverts à Berlin est cet étrange champs de blocs de béton dans le centre ville. Ce mémoriel a été designé pour avoir un sentiment de mal à l'aise quand on regarde ou qu'on se promène entre les stelles. Ca marche. Les blocs ont différentes tailles et le sol n'est pas plat. Quand on marche dans le monument, on a probablement une petite idée de l'état d'esprit des Juifs de l'époque. Ou probablement pas, je veux dire qu'il n'est pas possible de même commencer à percevoir ces sentiments mais la volonté est là.

A friend told me recently he did not find Berlin attractive for a capital city. I was quite amazed. I agree that it is not full of old buildings from centuries ago, its history is much more recent. It does not have the tour eiffel, Big Ben or imperial palaces. But it is so charged with history and dualism that I could only be impressed when I went there.
Here is one of its symbols: the Berlin wall. Families torn apart, knowing their relatives go on with their lives on the other side but unable to see them, or even have news from them I guess. How do they live? What's happening on the other side of the wall? The wall... I will remember long that day in 1989 when I heard: "look at that, this is history".

Un ami m'a dit il y a peu qu'il ne trouvait pas que Berlin était une capitale attrayante. J'étais surprise. C'est vrai que la ville ne regorge pas de batiments anciens vieux de plusieurs siècles, son histoire est beaucoup plus récente. Elle n'a pas la tour eiffel, Big Ben ou des palais impériaux. Mais elle est tellement chargée d'histoire que je ne pouvais être qu'impressionnée quand j'y suis allée.
Voici un de ses symboles: le mur de Berlin. Des familles déchirées, qui savent que leurs parents continuent de vivre de l'autre côté du mur mais sans pouvoir les voir, ou peut-être, j'imagine, sans avoir de nouvelles d'eux. Comment vivent-ils? Que leur arrive-t-il de l'autre côté du mur? Le mur... Je me rappellerai longtemps ce jour de 1989 où j'ai entendu: "regardes ça, c'est un moment historique".
