Trevi Fountain, Roma / La fontaine de Trévi, Rome, Italy

It may not look like much on a picture, especially so small, but this fountain is amazing. Notice the windows on the size, their size is normal. This means the main statue is taller than a floor height. Actually the fountain is right behind a building and occupies the full size of it. Let's just say it is gigantic.

It is very surprising to see how the space around the fountain has been arranged. It is very typical of crowded and old European cities. The fountain is on the side of a small place all surrounded by buildings. It is actually very hard if not impossible to take a picture of the whole fountain. Thankfully, our eyes are there and serve us better than any technology, and the sight of this fountain is breathtaking.

Ca ne paye pas de mine en photo, surtout quand c'est aussi petit, mais cette fontaine est étonnante. Remarquez les fenetres sur les cotés, elles sont a la taille normale. Cela signifie que la hauteur de la statue principale dépasse un étage. En fait, la fontaine est juste derriere un immeuble et occupe toute la taille de l'immeuble en question. C'est juste gigantesque.

L'arrangement de l'espace autour de la fontaine est assez surprenant. C'est assez typique des villes européennes anciennes et surpeuplées. La fontaine est sur le coté d'une petute place toute entourée d'immeubles. C'est tres difficile et presque impossible de trouver un endroit pour prendre une photo de la fontaine dans son ensemble. Heureusement, nos yeux sont la et sont plus efficaces que la plupart des technologies, et la vue de cette fontaine est a couper le souffle.

Halloween

Thanks to heavy advertisement and communication through TV series, movies and such, Halloween has become a widely known event.
I will not talk again of it being a commercial celebration, I already did that. I will not explain its Irish origin when people dressed as evil spirits... Wikipedia does it better than me.

I would like to talk about the real meaning of Halloween in today's society. First of all, Halloween is mainly a day for children. It is always a pleasure for kids to disguise and go door to door for "treat or trick", and so collect a lot of sweets...

For grown-ups, Halloween is a pretex to party and disguise. And that's it, anywhere I saw it, the whole reach of Halloween. Well, i must say, it is rather disappointing. I found disguised festivals better than that. If anyone knows the place to be for Halloween... Maybe Ireland?

Grace à une forte publicité et à travers la communication par les séries télé, films et Cie, Halloween est une fête bien connue du grand public.
Je ne parlerai pas encore du fait que c'est une fête commerciale, je l'ai déjà fait. Je n'expliquerai pas son origine Irlandaise où les gens se déguisaient en esprits malins... Wikipedia le fait mieux que moi.

Je voudrais parler de la portée d'Halloween dans la société actuelle. D'abord, Halloween est une fête pour les enfants. C'est toujours un plaisir pour eux de se déguiser et d'aller de porte en porte récupérer des bonbons...

Pour les adultes, Halloween est un prétexte pour faire la fête et se déguiser. Et voila, partout où je l'ai vue, toute la portée d'Halloween. Je dois dire que c'est assez décevant. J'ai vu des festivaux déguisés qui étaient bien mieux. Si quelqu'un sait où il faut aller pour faire un vrai bon Halloween... En Irlande peut-être?

Hassan II mosque / Mosquee Hassan II, Casablanca, Maroc

Here is the inside of the Hassan II mosque, which is undoubtedly prestigious. Hassan II is the previous king of Marocco, and he was traditionalist. Like all people of importance, he wanted to leave his mark in the country. So he started the project of this mosque, which was colossal. Obviously it needed important funds, and so the king extracted as much money as he could from the poor people and in particular the middle class of the country. Although it is a very touristic place, it left a bitter taste to the marrocan people.

Voici l'interieur de la mosquee Hassan II, qui est vraiment prestigieux. Hassan II est le roi precedent roi du Maroc, et il etait traditionnel. Comme tous les hommes avec une certaine importance, il voulait laisser sa trace dans le pays. Il a donc demarre le projet de la mosquee, qui est colossale. Evidemment il a eu besoin de fonds tres importants, et donc le roi a extrait du "petit peuple" et plus particulierement de la classe moyenne autant d'argent qu'il pouvait. Bien que ce soit un lieu tres touristique, cela a laisse un gout amer aux Marocains.

Checkpoint Charlie, Berlin, Germany

This is the most famous checkpoint to cross the wall between Berlin East and West. It remains now useless, one of the symbols of that past time. When you arrive there, you hardly even notice it, maybe if a few tourists take pictures. It's hard to realize how a place that was so important at some point in time is now so shallow.

Voici le plus célèbre poste de vérification pour traverser le mur entre Berlin Est et Ouest. Il est maintenant inutilisé, un des symboles du temps passé. En y arrivant, on le remarque à peine, peut-être si quelques touristes prennent des photos. On imagine difficilement qu'un endroit si important fut un temps puisse devenir si anodin.

Cosplay in Tokyo, Japan

When you go to Tokyo, if you are even remotely curious, you know you have to go see people doing cosplay. It happens in various locations of the town, in Akihabara or Harajuku on sundays for example.
If you like even remotely mangas, I would guess that is part of the reason why you went to Tokyo. Then you know what "cosplay" is: costume play. You can see all sorts of costumes, not covering much for some... I even saw a nun costume (and yes, it was a costume) or a classic dragon ball costume.

Cosplay seems to be a way for the Japanese youth to express itself and to get away from all the pressure in their everyday life. It may be difficult to understand for occidentals but the Japanese society has a lot of expectations for its youth, with consequences. The suicide rate of teens in Japan is one of the world's highest.

Si vous allez à Tokyo et que vous êtes un tant soit peu curieux, vous irez voir les gens faire du cosplay. Il y en a dans plusieurs endroits de la ville, à Akihabara ou Harajuku les dimanches par exemple.
Si vous aimez un tant soit peu les mangas, j'aurais tendance à penser que c'est en partie pour cela que vous êtes à Tokyo. Dans ce cas vous connaissez "cosplay" ou "costume play". On peut y voir toutes sortes de costumes, pour certains qui ne recouvrent pas grand chose... J'ai même vu un costume de bonne soeur (et oui, c'était un costume) ou plus classique un costume de dragon ball.

Le Cosplay semble être un mode d'expression pour la jeunesse Japonaise, un moyen de s'échapper de la pression de la vie de tous les jours. Ce peut être difficile à comprendre pour des occidentaux mais les attentes de la société Japonaise pour sa jeunesse sont grandes, et cela a des conséquences. Le taux de suicide des ados au Japon est l'un des plus hauts du monde.

I can't handle this. I can't handle living in this world at times. My belly won't stop aching and I have no idea why, how can that be??
Stop that, stop the pain that never stops and make the stop final. I'm tired, I'm down, I'm lonely, I'm miserable. People envy me but there is nothing to envy. Achievements are nothing but temporary euphoria.

What remains is pain pain pain and fear. It sticks around, it sticks to me, it's nothingness but it's everything on the moment. This is too hard, this world is too fierce, how is it possible to live at all?

Geek in the Pink - Jason Mraz

What a genius that guy is! The rythm, the wordplays (and I do recommend the song "wordplay" as well), the elocution, melodies, and so on... I mean, I don't know the person obviously but really, the composer/singer/showman is one of the rare artists I really consider as such nowadays. Showbiz... So what? Trends... As if! His sound really is personal, original and he is GOOD in a concert.

So here is, for once, a song with a happy sound. Please bear the first minut or so because the rest is worth it. Appreciate his stage performance and the unplugged sound, the quality of the show altogether.

Huang Shan, China

Huang Shan (the Yellow mountain) is one of the sacred mountains in China. It is not very far from Shanghai, but if you want to go there on a WE, be sure to prepare yourself for an adventure! There is no easy way to go there, and the most convenient is probably the night train. When you get there, except if you take the cable car and wait in the loooong queue, be prepared to a 3h climb of stairs in the forest. It is so nice when you get to the top!
We had the chance to see a beautiful sunset on a sea of clouds, really magnifiscent. Of course in the morning, the clouds had gone up and the atmosphere was more misterious, like in the picture. These mountains hide a lot of different faces... Up to you to discover them!

Huang Shan (la montagne Jaune) est l'une des montagnes sacrées de Chine. Elle n'est pas très loin de Shanghai, mais si vous voulez y aller un WE, préparez-vous à l'aventure! Il n'y a pas de moyen facile pour y aller, le plus pratique étant certainement le train de nuit. En arrivant, à moins que vous ne preniez le téléférique et subissiez la loooongue queue d'attente, soyez paré pour les 3h de grimpe d'escaliers dans la forêt. C'est tellement agréable d'arriver tout en haut!
On a eu la chance de voir un superbe coucher de soleil sur une mer de nuages, vraiment magnifique. Bien sur, le matin les nuages avaient monté et on se retrouvait dans une atmosphère plus mistérieuse, comme sur la photo. Ces montagnes cachent de multiples visages... A vous de les découvrir!
